What is a celebrant?

A celebrant is someone who creates and officiates personalised ceremonies for significant life events. Unlike registrars, who must follow specific legal scripts and conduct ceremonies in licensed venues, celebrants have complete freedom to create bespoke ceremonies that reflect you as a couple.

I specialise in wedding and vow renewal ceremonies, crafting words and moments that are completely personal to you.

Is a celebrant ceremony legally binding?

In England and Wales, celebrant ceremonies are not currently legally binding. However, this is actually a benefit because it means we have complete freedom in what we create – no restrictions on location, timing, content or structure.

You will need to complete a short legal signing separately with a registrar. Most couples do this a few days before their celebrant ceremony or on the morning of their wedding day. In Cambridge, this is a quick appointment that simply handles the legal paperwork.

Many couples tell me they barely remember their legal signing, but they treasure every moment of their celebrant ceremony because that is where they truly felt married.

Why would I choose a celebrant instead of a registrar?

Complete freedom is the main reason. With a celebrant, you can:

Marry anywhere – gardens, fields, beaches, family homes, unusual venues
Have a ceremony at any time of day
Include whatever content you want – poems, music, readings, rituals
Mention religion or spirituality if you wish
Have a ceremony of any length
Involve family and friends in meaningful ways
Truly personalise every word and moment

Registrar ceremonies must take place in licensed venues during specific hours, cannot include religious content and follow set scripts with limited personalisation options.

Can you include religious or spiritual elements?

Absolutely. One of the benefits of working with a celebrant is that we can include whatever is meaningful to you. If you would like prayers, blessings, religious readings or spiritual elements, we can incorporate them.

This is particularly valuable for mixed-faith couples who want to honour both traditions. My background in interfaith relations means I can help you blend different faith elements sensitively and meaningfully.

How do I book you?

Get in touch via email or phone, and we'll arrange a free initial consultation. This can be in person (if you are local) or via video call. During this meeting, we will chat about your plans and see if we are the right fit.

If you would like to work together, I will send you booking information. A 50% deposit secures your date, with the remaining balance due no less than two months before your ceremony.

How far in advance should I book?

I recommend booking as early as possible, especially for popular dates during the wedding season (May to September). Some couples book 12-18 months in advance, while others book with less notice if they are planning more intimate ceremonies.

Question 7

Do you only work in Cambridge?

Cambridge is my base, and I know the area well. However, I am very happy to travel across the UK and even overseas. There is an additional travel cost of 45p per mile over 30 miles from Cambridge.

For destination weddings, we can discuss travel arrangements during our initial consultation.

Will you take on another wedding on my day?

Accepted Answer

No. When I am working with you, you have my complete focus and undivided attention. I never book two ceremonies on the same day.

What if it rains at my outdoor ceremony?

Accepted Answer

We will discuss backup plans during our meetings. Most venues have indoor options available. If you are determined to be outside, we can also talk about arrangements like marquees or beautiful umbrellas.

Rain does not have to ruin anything – couples and guests embrace the moment with umbrellas and smiles.

Question 10

How long will my ceremony be?

That is entirely up to you. Most wedding ceremonies I create are between 20-40 minutes but there is no set length. We will craft something that feels right for you.

Some couples want shorter, more intimate ceremonies. Others want to take their time, include multiple readings and rituals, and create a longer experience. It is your day, your choice.

Can we write our own vows?

Absolutely! Writing your own vows makes the ceremony even more personal.

If you would like to write your vows but are unsure how to start, I can guide you through the process. I can also provide examples for inspiration or help you refine drafts you have written.

If writing your own vows feels too daunting, that is fine too. I will include vows in the ceremony that reflect your relationship.

Can we include symbolic rituals?

Yes! Symbolic rituals can add meaningful moments to your ceremony. Popular options include:

Handfasting (binding your hands together)
Unity candle (lighting a single candle together)
Sand ceremony (blending different coloured sands)
Ring warming (guests blessing your rings)
Wine ceremony (sharing wine together)
Tree planting
Love letters and wine box

I have also created unique rituals like "Heart to Heart" (exchanging rose quartz hearts) and "Nurture Your Love" (a rosemary watering ceremony involving guests).

We will discuss what feels meaningful to you during our planning meetings.

Question 13

Can children or family members participate?

Definitely! Many couples love to involve loved ones in their ceremony. Family members or friends can:

Deliver readings
Participate in symbolic rituals
Share a blessing or personal words
Stand with you during the ceremony
Help with music

If you have children from previous relationships, including them in the ceremony can be a beautiful way to acknowledge your new family unit.

What about music?

You can have whatever music you like – live musicians, recorded music, a friend playing an instrument or no music at all.

I can coordinate with your musicians if needed and we will make sure the music integrates seamlessly with the ceremony flow.

What if we are nervous about being in front of people?

Accepted Answer

That is completely normal! Many couples feel nervous about being the centre of attention.

We can discuss ways to make it easier – perhaps including moments where attention shifts to others, keeping the ceremony shorter or practicing beforehand so you feel more confident.

On the day, I will guide you through everything. You won't be alone up there – I will be with you every step of the way.

What happens at the free consultation?

We will meet for a relaxed conversation, either in person over coffee or via video call. This is your chance to tell me about your plans and see if you feel comfortable with me.

I will explain how I work, answer any questions you have and give you an honest sense of whether we are a good fit. There is no pressure and no obligation.

Question 17

How many meetings will we have?

As many as you need. The package includes unlimited meetings, so we will meet as often as necessary for you to feel confident about your ceremony.

Typically, couples have 3-5 meetings, but some need more and others need fewer. There is no set number – we will work at your pace.

Question 18

Can we meet in person or does it have to be online?

Accepted Answer

Both options work! If you are local to Cambridge, we can meet in person. If you are further away or prefer online meetings, we can use video calls. Many couples do a mix of both.

Do you need to visit our venue?

Accepted Answer

It is helpful but not essential. If you would like me to visit your venue with you, I am happy to do that. It helps me understand the space and offer suggestions if you are still making decisions about ceremony layout.

If a venue visit is not practical, photos and a conversation about the space work fine too.

What happens if we need to change our date?

Accepted Answer

Life happens and sometimes dates need to change. I will work with you to find a solution if possible. The earlier you let me know about any changes, the more options we can consider.

Question 21

Do you offer payment plans?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can pay the full fee upfront or pay in two instalments: 50% deposit when booking and the remaining 50% no less than two months before your ceremony.

Vow renewal ceremonies: £640

These fees include everything described in the packages – unlimited meetings, bespoke ceremony script, help with vows and readings, coordination with suppliers, venue visit if wanted, rehearsal if needed, and my presence and care on your special day.

Travel: There is an additional cost of 45p per mile over 30 miles from Cambridge.

Overseas Travel: If you are planning a destination wedding, we can discuss travel arrangements during our initial consultation.

Symbolic Elements: If you would like specific items for rituals (unity candles, sand ceremony supplies etc.), I will source these and price them in consultation with you.
